Divergent Evolutionary Drift contradicts Power Law

چکیده
Recent studies of properties of various biological networks revealed that many of them display scale free characteristics. Since the theory of scale free networks is applicable to evolving networks, one can hope that it provides not only a model of a biological network in its current state but also some insight into the evolution of the network. Here, we re-investigate the probability distributions and scaling properties underlying some models for biological networks and protein domain evolution and point out possible traps in applying a scale free framework to such data. In particular, we demonstrate that divergent evolutionary drift, which is plausible evolutionary mechanisms, is not compatible with scale free models. Contact: [email protected]

Adaptive divergence despite strong genetic drift: genomic analysis of the evolutionary mechanisms causing genetic differentiation in the island fox (Urocyon littoralis).
The evolutionary mechanisms generating the tremendous biodiversity of islands have long fascinated evolutionary biologists. Genetic drift and divergent selection are predicted to be strong on islands and both could drive population divergence and speciation. Alternatively, strong genetic drift may preclude adaptation. We conducted a genomic analysis to test the roles of genetic drift and diverg...
متن کاملGenomic Signature of Adaptive Divergence despite Strong Nonadaptive Forces on Edaphic Islands: A Case Study of Primulina juliae
Both genetic drift and divergent selection are expected to be strong evolutionary forces driving population differentiation on edaphic habitat islands. However, the relative contribution of genetic drift and divergent selection to population divergence has rarely been tested simultaneously. In this study, restriction-site associated DNA-based population genomic analyses were applied to assess t...
متن کاملRelativistic Interpretation (with Non-Zero Photon Mass) of the Small Ether Drift Velocity Detected by Michelson, Morley and Miller
A detailed analysis of the Michelson-Morley ether drift experiment (from 1887 to 1926) contradicts the classical law of addition of velocities. The small ether drifts first observed by Michelson are not compatible with Newtonian Mechanics. This result paved the way for the first form of the Theory of Relativity in which light velocity is always equal to c in all directions, and no such drift is...
متن کاملDetecting genetic drift versus selection in human evolution.
Recent paleoanthropological discoveries reveal a diverse, potentially speciose human fossil record. Such extensive morphological diversity results from the action of divergent evolutionary forces on an evolving lineage. Here, we apply quantitative evolutionary theory to test whether random evolutionary processes alone can explain the morphological diversity seen among fossil australopith and ea...
متن کاملTesting evolutionary hypotheses for phenotypic divergence using landscape genetics.
Understanding the evolutionary causes of phenotypic variation among populations has long been a central theme in evolutionary biology. Several factors can influence phenotypic divergence, including geographic isolation, genetic drift, divergent natural or sexual selection, and phenotypic plasticity. But the relative importance of these factors in generating phenotypic divergence in nature is st...
